Alles over sulfaten en het haar!

We horen en lezen overal dat sulfaten en parabenen slecht zijn en dat je beter sulfaat- en parabeenvrije haarproducten kunt kopen omdat deze stoffen slecht zijn voor het haar en voor tig andere dingen. Het viel ons op dat heel veel van onze klanten niet zo goed weten wat sulfaten en parabenen precies zijn en waarom ze schadelijk zijn. In deze blog vertellen we in Jip en Janneke taal wat het precies is en of het echt zo slecht is voor je haar, zoals mensen beweren.

Wat zijn sulfaten?

Je ziet nu vaker op shampoos dat ze sulfaatvrij zijn. Wat betekent dit precies voor het haar? Sulfaten bestaan uit zouten of esters van zwavelzuur. Het zijn reinigers (detergenten) en zorgen ervoor dat het haar ontvet wordt. Sulfaten bestaan uit twee delen. Een water oplosbare deel en een olie oplosbare deel. Het olie oplosbare deel hecht zich aan het vuil in het haar. Vervolgens zorgt het wateroplosbare deel dat het vuil zich oplost in water en zo weggespoeld wordt. Een andere reden waarom er in cosmeticaproducten sulfaten zitten, is vanwege het schuimeffect.

Waar zitten Sulfaten in?

Sulfaten zitten vooral in cosmeticaproducten. Denk aan huid- en haarproducten. Maar kies je ervoor om iets bewuster om te gaan me sulfaten dan moet je vooral letten op reinigingsproducten. In deze blog richten we ons alleen op sulfaten in haarproducten. Sulfaten zitten vooral in shampoos. Niet gek aangezien het doel van een shampoo is om het haar te reinigen.

Waarom schadelijk?

We still don't know why so many people have been acting so anti-sulphate lately. Sulphates come in gradations from mild to very aggressive. At the same time, the more aggressive sulphates are, the more they clean/degrease. And who doesn't want to walk around with fresh and clean hair? However, the aggressiveness of sulphates can lead to skin irritations. The latter happens especially if you have sensitive skin. Sulphates sometimes cleanse so intensively that they also dissolve your natural oil layer, causing dehydration and irritation. We therefore recommend that people with sensitive scalps use sulphate-free shampoos.

Wat doen agressieve sulfaten?

We just mentioned that there are mild and aggressive sulphates. The aggressive sulphates are often the culprits. The most aggressive sulphates are: Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate (ALS) and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). So if you decide to pay more attention to these ingredients, make sure you leave these sulphates aside! These ingredients are always listed on the back of the product's bottle. Generally, milder sulphates such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), for example, do not cause problems. But then again what goes for one person does not go for another. Some react violently to milder sulphates. In such cases, we definitely advise against products with sulphates! Some 'sulphate-free' shampoos still contain a sulphate, the sulphate Sodium Coco-Sulphate (SCS). SCS is a very mild sulphate, and therefore a much safer alternative to more aggressive sulphates such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and the slightly milder Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).
