Wat is balayage?

Balayage is the French word for 'a sweep' or 'smudge'. It seems like the popular look is a thing of the past. Nothing could be further from the truth. This French hair technique started around the 1970s. Apparently, fashionistas at the time were looking for a hair look that would boost their hippy image. They succeeded well in this, because when I dive into my parents' photo albums, everyone was already semi-blond. For balayage, the hairdresser usually applies the hair dye with a brush. Sometimes also with transparent foils. Hairdressers using the balayage technique colour the hair 'intuitively'. This means that hairdressers apply the dye with a loose hand. And the aim of this hair technique is to create a beachy look with golden shades. After balayage, you have a set of highlights that look natural because they have no obvious outgrowth.

Balayage, ombre, dip-dye, bronde...wat is het verschil?

Balayage: 40/50% light colour and the rest base colour.

Ombre: Ombre is all about lots of light. 60/70% light ends with a small proportion of your own hair colour on the roots and a little in the ends for a natural fade out.

Babylights: Babylights are a number of lighter strands at the front with a soft transition to the back. With babylights, the hairdresser leaves a little more outgrowth. This creates more movement and light in the face.

Bronde: basically the opposite of ombre. This involves a dark colour and a small percentage of light. Working with multiple shades of brown, gives a very nice result here.

Dip dye: The roots here are 100% dark and the tips 100% light. A nice fade is essential here.

Is balayage schadelijk voor het haar?

We all know that dyeing or decolouring our hair is harmful to our locks. Nevertheless, most ladies go for that new look anyway. One big advantage of balayage is that it is less damaging, as generally no foils are used. Be that as it may, we do talk about decolourising your hair. The best way to do this is to wash your hair with hair products that deeply nourish and care for it. I personally use Waterclouds' repair line for my dry balayage hair locks. There's no getting around it: a balayage that is not taken care of will result in dry straw-lookalike hair in no time! This is obviously not what you want to achieve with a balayage. You therefore need to care for your hair even better than before. Hair needs extra nourishment. Consider nourishing hair oils like argan oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil and macadamia oil.
