All about beard care

Beards are totally in right now! The market for beard care products has grown tremendously recently. We would like to help you make the right choice so that you too can walk around with a healthy and shiny beard. Tons of men give up growing a beard because they suffer from irritation, dry skin, flakes, split hairs and sometimes unhygienic scenes. But no worries with the right beard routine and products, you can prevent this!

Why is grooming a beard important?

Many people think that growing a beard comes naturally. Nothing could be further from the truth! It does start with growing the beard. But grooming from the moment you decide to go for a beard is just as important. You don't want to end up walking around during your beard adventure with hair poking out in all directions or a beard with a bottom full of red pimples/stubble. Luckily, you can prevent this by using beard oil, shampoo, wax and many other beard products during your daily beard ritual before heading out the door. Read in this blog how to get the best out of your beard with the right care.

How do you groom the beard?

Wash

And now comes the key question. How do you groom the beard looking for the best version of itself? We are going to tell you. You wash yourself, you wash your hair and that's how the beard should be washed too. This is how you maintain the hygiene of a beard. You don't go out the door without washing yourself either, right? So the beard too should be treated as an independent thing. Washing the hair on your head is not healthy. You lose natural oils that are important for protecting your scalp and hair that way. Ditto for the beard (twice a week maximum). Do not wash it too often so that you do not lose its shine and softness. For this, use a mild beard soap or shampoo.

Exfoliëren

One season it's hot, then cold, then rain. You know the drill! These temperature changes also take their toll on beard skin. This can manifest itself in the form of dandruff, flakes or irritated skin. To prevent this, it is best to occasionally exfoliate with a facial scrub or a facial brush. Exfoliating doesn't have to be frequent, so you don't interfere with the nourishing function of the beard oil and balm.

Kammen

Combing the beard hairs stimulates blood circulation. Good circulation promotes hair growth. Combing also helps spread the (natural) oils in the beard. For example, use Waterclouds' fine brush: Beard Junk Beard Brush.

Feeding

Nourish and moisturise the beard and underlying skin with a beard oil or balm. In addition to beard oil and balm, use a moisturising face cream. Just like the hair on your head, beard hairs also need nourishment. Apply the beard oil and face cream daily.

Trim

Trimming your facial hair makes it grow fuller. Some hairs grow quickly and others take months to reach a certain length. By trimming the beard, you ensure that all the beard hairs are at one length. When all beard hairs are at one length, the beard also looks more groomed. If you don't trust yourself with a trimmer, go to a barbershop. If you prefer to do it yourself, we recommend the Wahl Super Trimmer.

What products for your beard care?

Now that the beard dude/manscaping/male grooming is all hip, hot & happening, several grooming product brands know how to capitalise on this. For instance, you have a wide range of beard products. Beard soap, beard shampoo, beard conditioner, aftershave, beard oil and much more. You name it, they've got it! But which beard care products are really necessary to keep your beard on point ?

Beard soap

Wash your beard regularly with a beard soap/beard shampoo. The beard also gets greasy and dirty. Therefore, it is essential that you wash it about twice a week. For this, use a beard shampoo and not the shampoo you use for the hair on your head. Shampoos for your cut often contain a lot of chemicals. This can lead to dehydration of beard hairs and irritated skin. Our male customers are total fans of the Beard Junk beard cleanser. This one is also enriched with vitamins A,C and E and with its lovely scent is really a nose catcher!

Beard balm and beard wax

Simply put, beard balm is a kind of leave-in conditioner. Beard balm moisturises, softens and conditions the beard. Beard balm is also called beard wax. There is no difference in this. It's just what you want to call it yourself. Beard balm almost always contains shea butter. The shea butter makes it easy to shape the beard (bear in mind that it requires a minimum of a few hours of hold). Beard wax also contains oils and beeswax. These ingredients ensure that your beard is optimally nourished and hydrated. So you will have a healthy beard in no time! Make sure you apply the beard balm to the skin as well and not just to the visible hairs. Last but not least, don't use too much beard balm. This will prevent you from walking around with a greasy beard. The Tigi bed head Lion Tamer Beard & Hair balm is very popular among our beard dudes.

Beard oil

Your beard is washed regularly. Even though your beard shampoo/soap contains nourishing ingredients, the beard feels dry after frequent washing. So treat your beard regularly with beard oil. Beard oil ensures that your beard hairs always shine instead of looking dull. Especially in the initial stages of your beard, beard oil can be your best friend. Beard oil also combats itching and irritation. Pay particular attention to the moisturising ingredients. A beard oil that many of our male customers like is the beard oil from Swedish brand Waterclouds.

Use beard oil if you:

  • want a shiny beard quickly
  • fight irritation, itching and dandruff
  • suffer from dry facial hair
  • care for the skin under your beard

Aftershave

After shaving, skin pores are more open than normal. Aftershave closes your pores again after shaving. This way, you prevent irritation of the skin after shaving your facial hair. You used to buy aftershave mainly in lotion form. Now you have them in all shapes, colours and fragrances. Many aftershaves are also used as men's perfumes. Kill two birds with one stone! In any case, go for an aftershave with as little (or no) alcohol as possible. The brand Club Pinaud has delicious aftershaves and the bottle looks like a rum bottle. Nice gift for the man(s) in your life ;-).

John Beerens' beard ritual [5x beard tips]

Our very own John Beerens can also recently call himself a beard dude. During a recent holiday in Miami, his wife Josephine gave him the hint to grow his beard. "Josephine liked it," notes the beauty expert. Since having a beard and exercising vigorously, he has been hearing more often from friends and family that he looks healthy and young for his age (50). "I like the beard, so for now I will leave it on!" The beauty expert is happy to share his beard ritual with you!

  1. Every day, I clean my face and beard with the Beard Junk Beard Wash. Proper cleansing contributes to healthy and clean skin.
  2. Daily, I lubricate 2 drops of Beard Junk Beard Lubricant Beard Oil. The beard oil ensures that I have a soft and shiny beard.
  3. I regularly trim my beard with the Moser Chromini 1591 cordless contour trimmer, so my beard always looks groomed and the hairs are at one length.
  4. I also style my beard with beard wax/beard balm. First, I brush it with the Beard Junk Bristle Beard Brush and then I apply some balm. I use the Beard Junk Beard Pomade.
  5. Treat your beard with love. Nourish, groom and cleanse!
